Title: State public health agency reports public health data to Centers for Disease Control

State: Draft

Perspective (Who is telling this story?): The State Department of Health

Story:
Although not mandated for all conditions, all state departments of health (or equalivents) report some information to the CDC. Partly because of internal silos within the CDC there are a variety of methods of reporting required using a variety of transports and a variety of message formats. Fortunately, there is an internal drive within CDC to move most reporting to an HL7 v2.5.1 message type. There exist a number of implementation guides for some of these conditions. NHIN Direct can greatly simplify this process by providing a standard transport and may influence some programs to transition to the HL7 v2.5.1 message standard.

Essential Data Exchange (What is the actual data being shared between parties that would facilitate this story?):

Nationally Notifiable Disease Condition reports.
