Open Discussion

Arien Malec

  • Decided to clarify the pilot go-live time frame and share some observations
    • Originally set a timeframe for the Implementations Geographies for late October/early November
    • Acknowledged that they missed a number of the key milestones
      • The June Face to Face meeting was pushed into July
      • Took a while to get to consensus after that F2F meeting
    • Reflected on his experience with software development
      • Main goal is to get the code in shape
        • This usually takes a long time, and is consonant with their current situation
      • Then begin the process for implementing the reference implementations
    • Observed that a lot of the Implementation Geographies are falling into the late December/early January time frame
      • That is a good time frame for operational/go-live targets
      • From his perspective they are on track
      • ONC will continue to support this through the go-live time frame and even after
    • Believes everyone is making good progress

David Kibbe

  • Indicated that he has been out in the field talking to doctors/potential users of Direct
    • Asked if there is any feedback so far
      • What is the reception from potential users?
      • Easy or difficult to explain what the Direct Project?

Doug Arnold

  • Responded that most doctors maintain a "wait and see" perspective
    • A "let me know when the time comes" situation

Will Ross

  • Indicated that Redwood MedNet functions at the ground level
    • Redwood MedNet's core partners are at said ground level
      • They are facing no traction problems
    • The Communications WG content has been particularly useful for:
      • Provider side
      • Tech/Business side

Paul Tuten

  • Reported that his experience has been similar
  • VisionShare has been concentrating on getting the Departments of Health on-board
    • But the value proposition of Direct has been successful
  • Indicated that it is kind of obvious: the more folk on board, the easier to sell the value proposition
    • Shared an analogy:
      • "The first fax machine is tough to sell, but then the traction picks up"

Arien Malec

  • Shared how Micky Trapathi mentioned how the first phones were sold in pairs
  • Further shared observation that selling "phones in pairs" might be a good strategy for Direct
    • Will Ross does the work in his sphere
    • Selling connectivity in pairs
      • Working with sender/receiver
      • Selling the benefits
      • Good way to articulate the value proposition

Will Ross

  • Responded that is exactly how Redwood MedNet is approaching the value proposition
    • No problem in getting the necessary traction

Parag More

  • MedAllies is making sure the provider/practice groups engage the receivers of the product
    • Excitement for this project
    • Initial group will be smaller to understand how well Direct is received and works

Paul Tuten

  • Stated that VisionShare is performing the natural pairing
    • Identifying a bunch of critical nodes to get them where they want
      • End-user level there is a pairing

David Kibbe

  • Shared his random observations from his "talk" to 2000 doctors at a meeting in Denver, CO
    • Seems as though not many really know about the Direct Project
    • Works well with vendors = more interested in general in technology
    • A lot of anxiety in the physician community:
      • Many have already paid a lot of money for one health information exchange or the other to achieve MU criteria
        • Significant amount of money invested
      • Asked about the context for the value proposition, especially if the HISPs offer the service at a cheap/month level
        • Physicians/IDNs are frustrated that Direct may be a much cheaper option that jeopardizes their past investments

Paul Tuten

  • Indicated their should there be a "ah ha" moment for what they are demonstrating
    • Asked if there is a gap in what they are doing with the pilots

David Kibbe

  • Responded there can be a couple "ah ha" moments:
    • Physician community: When they realize Direct is a cheap way to get to that level
    • Not sure of the other ones
      • There may be some negative ones when they realize the HIEs are well-guarded
        • Could have paid less for the initiatives they took on
      • Cannot speak about the different pilots that are on-board

Parag More

  • Indicated he wanted to discuss about possible needs with respect to resources
  • Reported that MedAllies can use someone for project management/tracking purposes

Paul Tuten
